Background of the study
Sand mining, an activity driven by the demand for construction materials, has become a critical environmental concern in many regions. In Sagamu, unregulated sand mining practices have been linked to accelerated riverbank erosion, contributing to significant landscape alterations and habitat loss (Afolabi, 2023). The extraction of sand destabilizes riverbanks, increases sedimentation, and disrupts the natural flow of water, leading to severe ecological imbalances (Bello, 2024). These environmental changes not only threaten biodiversity but also jeopardize the livelihoods of local communities dependent on riverine resources. Recent studies have underscored the need for sustainable mining practices to balance economic benefits with environmental conservation (Afolabi, 2023). This research will critically examine the extent of riverbank erosion attributable to sand mining, evaluating both physical changes and socio-economic impacts on the affected communities (Bello, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Sagamu Local Government Area faces mounting environmental challenges due to rampant sand mining, which has led to pronounced riverbank erosion. The destabilization of riverbanks compromises local ecosystems and increases the risk of flooding, adversely affecting agricultural lands and settlements. Despite the economic benefits of sand mining, its environmental costs have become unsustainable. The lack of effective regulation and enforcement further exacerbates the problem. This study aims to quantify the impact of sand mining on riverbank erosion and assess its socio-economic repercussions, thereby providing critical evidence for improved regulatory measures (Afolabi, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To determine the extent of riverbank erosion linked to sand mining in Sagamu.

  2. To assess the environmental and socio-economic impacts of erosion.

  3. To recommend sustainable sand mining practices.

Research questions:

  1. What is the extent of riverbank erosion in areas affected by sand mining?

  2. How does sand mining contribute to environmental degradation and socio-economic challenges?

  3. What sustainable practices can mitigate the negative impacts of sand mining?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Sand mining significantly accelerates riverbank erosion in Sagamu.

  2. Riverbank erosion due to sand mining negatively affects local livelihoods.

  3. Implementing sustainable mining practices can reduce erosion and its impacts.

Significance of the study
The study highlights the environmental and socio-economic consequences of unregulated sand mining, offering vital insights for policymakers, environmental agencies, and local communities. Its recommendations aim to balance economic interests with environmental conservation, promoting sustainable practices in Sagamu (Bello, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of sand mining on riverbank erosion in Sagamu Local Government Area.

Definitions of terms:

  • Sand Mining: The extraction of sand from an open pit, riverbed, or beach for industrial purposes.

  • Riverbank Erosion: The wearing away of banks by the flow of water.

  • Sustainable Practices: Methods that aim to reduce environmental impact while maintaining economic viability.
